Wongwang

Wongwang was a Buddhist monk of the Silla kingdom who earned renown studying and lecturing on Buddhist scriptures in China before returning home to introduce new Buddhist learning to Silla. Devoted to public edification, he sought to strengthen the people's morality and social ethics, and his most notable achievement was the Five Secular Precepts (Sesok Ogye), which became a code of conduct for the Hwarang. He also composed the Geolsapyo, a petition written at King Jinpyeong's command asking the Sui dynasty of China to send troops.
