Won Gyun
元均General1540~1597
Won Gyun (元均, 1540–1597) was a military officer of the mid-Joseon period who commanded the Korean navy during the Imjin War. He rose to the post of Naval Commander of the Three Provinces (Samdo Sugun Tongjesa) after Yi Sun-sin, but in 1597 the Joseon navy suffered a crushing defeat at the Battle of Chilcheollyang, in which he too was killed. Frequently contrasted with Yi Sun-sin, he remains a controversial figure whose record draws sharply divided assessments.
