Wonhyo (617-686) was a Buddhist monk, scholar, and thinker active from the late Three Kingdoms period into the era of Silla. He worked to bring Buddhism to ordinary people by explaining its difficult doctrines in accessible terms, and he developed the thought of hwajaeng, which sought to reconcile the conflicting views of different Buddhist schools. His commentary on the Awakening of Mahayana Faith (Daeseung-gisillon-so) is regarded as a landmark work that influenced Buddhist thought across East Asia.
