Yeonsangun

燕山君King

1476~1506

Yeonsangun (1476-1506) was the eldest legitimate son of King Seongjong and became the tenth monarch of Joseon. During his reign he carried out the Muo and Gapja literati purges, removing many officials and scholars, and his tyrannical rule eventually led to his removal from the throne through the Jungjong coup. He is one of Joseon's most notable deposed kings, symbolizing an era in which the conflict between royal and ministerial power reached its extreme.
