Yu Gilchun

ScholarEnlightenment Faction
Yu Gil-jun (1856-1914) was a scholar and figure of the enlightenment faction in late Joseon. As the first Western exchange student from Korea, he toured the United States and other countries and authored 'Seoyugyeonmun' in mixed Korean-Chinese script, introducing Western civilization and institutions and contributing to modern enlightenment. This work also influenced the establishment of modern Korean writing style. Traces of him remain in Seoul, where he was active.
