Yu Inseok

Yu In-seok (1842–1915) was a Neo-Confucian scholar and righteous-army commander of the late Joseon and Korean Empire period, a leading figure who carried on the scholarly lineage of Hwaseo Yi Hang-no and upheld the wijeong-cheoksa (defend orthodoxy, reject heterodoxy) ideology. In 1895, responding to the assassination of Queen Min and the top-knot cutting decree, he raised a righteous army and led the anti-Japanese struggle as commander of the Hojwa Uijin. He later left the country and took refuge in the Russian Maritime Province, where he served as supreme commander of the Thirteen-Provinces Righteous Army and continued the independence movement from abroad.
