Yun Jichung

Yun Ji-chung (1759–1791) was a Catholic of the late Joseon period, regarded as Korea's first Catholic martyr. Baptized with the name Paul, he held his mother's funeral according to Catholic rites and burned the ancestral tablets to abolish the traditional ancestral sacrifices (the Jinsan Incident), for which he was beheaded during the Sinhae Persecution. His case became a landmark clash between the new faith and the Confucian ritual order that underpinned Joseon society, and he was beatified by Pope Francis in 2014.
