Regent Heungseon

Gojong's father, the Heungseon Daewongun, rebuilt Gyeongbokgung Palace and pursued an isolationist policy.

    Heungseon Daewongun rebuilt Gyeongbokgung, burned during the Imjin War, to bolster royal prestige, but the forced donations alienated the people.

    All but 47 of hundreds of private Confucian academies were abolished, eliminating the Sarim's power base and expanding the tax base.

  3. 쇄국 정책Rejection of Foreign Trade and Cheokwabi

    After repelling French and American incursions, Heungseon erected Cheokwabi monuments nationwide declaring refusal of foreign trade.

  4. 삼정 문란 대응Household Military Tax Reform

    Heungseon imposed military cloth tax on yangban households as well, aiming to reduce the inequality of the military service system.
