Tomb Area of Sin Seon-gyeong and Ryu In-ho

The tomb area of Sin Seon-gyeong and Ryu In-ho is the burial ground of Sin Seon-gyeong, a civil official of the early Joseon period, and his son-in-law Ryu In-ho. Sin Seon-gyeong, a second-class merit subject (Wonjong Gongsin) in the reign of Sejo, held such posts as Inspector (Jangnyeong) of the Office of the Inspector-General and, in the reign of Seongjong, Deputy Director of the Privy Council (Dongji Jungchubusa); he was the father of Royal Noble Consort Sin (Sugui Sin), a concubine of King Deokjong. Ryu In-ho, Sin Seon-gyeong's son-in-law, served from the reign of Seongjong to that of Jungjong as Inspector of the Office of the Inspector-General and as Third Councilor of the Ministry of Works (Gongjo Chamui), among other posts. Beside the twin-mound tomb of Sin Seon-gyeong and his wife, Lady Han of the Cheongju clan, the joint tomb of his son-in-law Ryu In-ho and Lady Sin of the Geochang clan is laid out side by side, and in front of it is the tomb of their descendant Ryu Jang-gu, a Susa (Naval Commander). At the tomb of Sin Seon-gyeong and his wife, a tomb stele, an offering table, and civil-official stone figures were erected, while at the tomb of Ryu In-ho and his wife, a tomb stele, an offering table, and a stone pillar marker (mangjuseok) were erected. The tombs of Sin Seon-gyeong and Ryu In-ho are important examples that well illustrate the burial system of the early Joseon period. In the tomb area of the son-in-law's Geochang Sin family, the graves of the son-in-law and the maternal grandson are laid out together, allowing us to surmise the social conditions of the early Joseon period, such as the practice of a husband living with his wife's family and of dividing property equally among sons and daughters. It is located 650 m from Exit 1 of Gaerong Station on Seoul Metropolitan Subway Line 5.
