About this place

This building is the church hall of Seungdong Church, founded in 1893 by American missionary Reverend Samuel Moore. Construction began in 1910 and was completed in 1912. This red-brick Western-style building is a representative example of early Protestant church architecture with a dynamic structure and imposing scale. Historically, on February 20, 1919, student representatives from various colleges held the 1st Student Leaders' Conference here to prepare for the independence movement, led by Kim Won-byeok of Yonhui College. The final organizational review was held on February 28, setting the stage for the March 1st independence declaration and nationwide demonstrations. In 1922, the Korean Young Women's Christian Association was also established here.
