About this place

This seowon was built by Go Insang of the Jeju Go clan to enshrine and venerate his ancestor Go Gyeong (literary title Munchungong) as the primary figure, with Muyeonggong Go Yonghyeon and Hwadang Go Manuk added. Located in Manhwa Village, Murim-ri, Simlim-myeon, Gochang-gun. Go Gyeong, the founding ancestor of the Munchungong branch, was a high official of the late Goryeo dynasty. Known as the child prodigy of Oksan who composed poetry at age five and recited the Analects at twelve, he passed the civil examination by royal appointment at age 16 in the 18th year of King Chungyeol (1292). Yi Saek, Jeong Mongju, and Gil Jae all respected him highly. Go Yonghyeon was a loyal subject of late Goryeo, and Go Manuk was Go Insang's father, renowned for his exemplary mourning rites. The shrine has 3 bays and the lecture hall 4 bays, both with hip-and-gable roofs. There are also east and west quarters and an outer gate. Descendants of the Jeju Go clan hold annual rites venerating Go Gyeong.
