About this place

The Gyeongseong Bumin Hall Bombing Site is where a bomb was detonated to disrupt a pro-Japanese rally on July 24, 1945. Gyeongseong Bumin Hall was a municipal theater built in December 1935 in Taepyeong-dong, equipped with a large hall, medium hall, small hall, and modern facilities including heating, cooling, lighting, and sound systems. Young patriots in their early twenties - Jo Mun-gi, Yu Man-su, U Dong-hak, and Gang Yun-guk - founded the Daehan Patriots Youth Party in May 1945 and awaited an opportunity for anti-Japanese resistance. When the Asia Peoples Outrage Rally hosted by pro-Japanese leader Park Chun-geum was announced for the evening of July 24, they secretly assembled and detonated two bombs, halting the rally. This act demonstrated the unbreakable will for national independence barely a month before liberation. Today a marker stone stands at the Seoul City Council site.
