Musil Head House of the Jeonju Ryu Clan

About this place

This is the grand head house of the Musil branch of the Jeonju Ryu clan. It was originally in Sugok-dong, Imdong-myeon, but was relocated to its present site in 1988 due to the construction of Imha Dam. The Jeonju Ryu clan traces its founding ancestor to Ryu Seup (柳濕), the Lord of Wansan in the late Goryeo period, and established its scholarly foundation within the Toegye academic lineage. This is the place where Ryu Yun-seon set up a separate household from Hanyang and resided in Yeongju, and where his son Ryu Seong moved and settled. Thereafter the descendants prospered and produced many talented figures, becoming a prominent clan of the Yeongnam region and coming to be called the Musil Ryu clan. It is a wooden tile-roofed house of seven bays in front and six bays on the side, with a seven-bay servants' quarters at the front, and the inner quarters are arranged in a square (ㅁ) shape. To the west of the inner quarters are attached the men's quarters, a three-bay daecheong (main wooden-floored hall), and a double-depth section, and behind it stands a shrine.
