Jangseung are a form of Korean folk religion — carved wooden or stone poles erected at village or temple entrances to mark boundaries and ward off evil spirits. The stone jangseung at Silsangsa Temple guard the temple entrance. Originally four stood by the stream, but one was swept away in a 1936 flood, leaving three. The remaining three are inscribed with titles such as 'Great General,' 'General,' and 'Underground Female General.'
