About this place

Namsan Seowon, located in Myora-ri, Seongdeok-myeon, Gimje, is a Joseon-era private local educational institution. It was founded in 1574 (the 7th year of King Seonjo) to honor the virtue and conduct of Yujihwa, who was an active member of the anti-peace faction (척화파) during the Manchu invasion of 1636. Later, during the reign of King Sunjo, Namgung Je was also enshrined here. The seowon was abolished in 1870 (the 7th year of King Gojong) under the edict suppressing private academies, and was rebuilt in 1970. The current compound includes a three-bay shrine called Gyeonguisa and the shrine gate Gyeonguimun. The central hall of Gyeonguisa enshrines the memorial tablets of Yujihwa and Namgung Je.
