According to the 'Wongaksa Sajeokbi' (Wongaksa Temple Historical Stele) recorded in 1984, during the Japanese colonial period in 1927, a Japanese monk named Aoki Taro founded a small temple affiliated with the Japanese Higashi Honganji sect, which was originally named Jinjo-sa. Shortly after liberation in August 1945, the current abbot Chunmyeong Changseok took over Jinjo-sa, renamed it Wongaksa (圓覺寺), and gradually expanded the temple's scale. In 1968, the Daeungjeon (main hall) was built, and in 1970 a bell tower was newly constructed. In 1975, a five-story stone pagoda was installed through the donation of Choe Yeonhwa. In 1976, a Mireuk Buddha statue was installed.
