Mitasa (Seongbuk)

Located just a single wall away from Bomunsa Temple, Mitasa—well known as Tapgol Seungbang—is a residence for Buddhist nuns. It is said that this temple was first founded in 950 by State Preceptor Hyegeo, who gave it the name Mitasa. In 1047, a stone pagoda was erected and it came to be called Tapgol Seungbang. The stone pagoda stands on the hill to the left of Danhagak, behind Daeungjeon (the Main Hall). This temple was rebuilt in 1131 by State Preceptor Hyegam, and in the Joseon period it was renovated by Queen Jeongsun of the Song clan, the consort of King Danjong. There is also an old six-story stone pagoda here, in which the upper three stories and the lower three stories date from different periods; the lower three stories are believed to have been built during the Goryeo dynasty.
