Daepungheon

Daepungheon is a building where, during the Joseon period, the inspecting officials (sutosa) who traveled from Gusanpo to Ulleungdo stayed while waiting for a favorable wind. The exact date of the building's construction cannot be confirmed, but according to the repair record of the Gusan Dongsa, there remains a record that it was repaired in 1851 (the 2nd year of King Cheoljong) and the plaque 'Daepungheon' was hung. The building is a single-line (一) hip-and-gable house of 4 kan on the front (south), 4 kan on the right side (west), and 3 kan on the left side (east); it sits facing south in the center of Gusan-ri, a small port village on the East Sea coast, and is currently used as a meeting hall for the village residents. Daepungheon is a building where, during the Joseon period, the inspecting officials (sutosa) who traveled from Gusanpo on the East Sea coast to Ulleungdo stayed while waiting for a favorable wind (sunpung); it shows distinctive features in its plan and in some of its framing techniques, but overall many parts of the building had been remodeled and altered to the point that the original form could not be discerned, so it was dismantled and restored in 2010. As a building where the inspecting officials who administered Ulleungdo during the Joseon period stayed while waiting for the wind, it holds great historical significance.
