A seowon was a private educational institution of the Joseon period, established to hold memorial rites for distinguished Confucian scholars and to educate local residents. The Hwanbong Seowon enshrines Cheon Manli as its principal figure — a Chinese military superintendent who came to Korea with 20,000 cavalry troops during the Imjin and Jeongyu Wars (1592-1598) and achieved brilliant military accomplishments. The two sons who came with him, Sang and Hui, are also enshrined. General Cheon Manli was a Chinese man who was naturalized in Korea during the reign of King Seonjo; his pen name was Saam, and he was particularly skilled in archery. Today, people bearing the Cheon surname regard this place as their ancestral origin (bongwan).
