About this place

Sinwonsa is a temple on the southwestern flank of Gyeryongsan National Park. Together with Donghaksa and Gapsa it is called one of the Three Great Temples of Gyeryongsan. Founded in the 11th year of King Uija of Baekje (651 CE), it has undergone multiple restorations and was repaired in 1876 and 1946 to reach its present form. The current Sinwonsa is said to have been relocated after being destroyed during the Imjin War; the original building site is believed to be the wide field to the south of Sinwonsa and Jungakdan Shrine. Boasting a long history, it holds a national treasure-designated Nosana Buddha hanging painting (gwaebultaeng), and its Daeungjeon Main Hall, Jungakdan Shrine, five-story stone pagoda, and Sorimwon stone Mireuk standing statue are all designated cultural heritage.
