Songgwangsa Temple is located on Jongnam Mountain in Wanju, Jeollabuk-do. It first appears in historical records at the end of the Unified Silla period, when the monk Cheching briefly stayed at what was then called Baengnyeonsa. According to tradition, Baengnyeonsa was a temple built next to a sacred spring on the southern slope of Jongnam Mountain. The temple has undergone multiple expansions and restorations through the Joseon era.
