A seowon was a private educational institution of the Joseon period, established for honoring outstanding Confucian scholars and educating local people. The Yucheon Seowon in Yeongcheon-ri, Jusaeng-myeon, Namwon was founded in 1830 (the 30th year of King Sunjo) by local Confucian scholars. It is also called Ohyeonsa because it enshrines five respected local Confucians centered on Bang Saryang, including Bang Gwion, An Tak, Bang Eunghyeon, and An Changguk. In 1868 (the 5th year of King Gojong), it was demolished by Heungseon Daewongun's edict suppressing private academies. Today, descendants have erected a commemorative stone (유허비) on the site, and only traces of the original walls, lecture hall, and caretaker's cottage remain. It was designated a Jeollabuk-do cultural heritage in 1984. Nearby attractions include Sagye Jeongsa, Gucheonsa, the Yocheon ecological wetland park, and Daegok-ri rock carvings.
