About this place

Unlike other regional hyanggyo, Myeoncheon Hyanggyo is one of the few that has not moved from its original construction site. Its current location matches records in the Sinjeung Donggukyeoji Seungnam stating that it is 2 ri east of the county seat. The exact founding date is not known, but it is said to have been established in the first year of King Taejo's reign (1392). The earliest record documenting changes to Myeoncheon Hyanggyo after its founding is the 'School Registry' (Hakgyo deungnok) of 1716 (the 42nd year of King Sukjong), which records that the buildings were in a state of disrepair. The surviving buildings include the Daeseongjeon shrine hall, the Myeongnyundang lecture hall, and the Dongmu and Seomu side halls. Memorial rites are held in spring and autumn.
