Oksan Seowon was established to commemorate and carry on the scholarship and virtue of Uichon Kim Namsik, Sieun Kim Iseong, and Inil-jeong Kim Seongeun. Kim Namsik was a disciple of Master Kim Jip; upon hearing that Korea had humiliatingly concluded peace with Qing during the Byeongjahoran (1636-1637), he returned weeping and settled at the foot of Gyeryeong Mountain, naming his home 'Daemyongyugye.' Kim Iseong was Kim Namsik's son, a disciple of Song Siyeol, and was known for his outstanding filial piety. Kim Seongeun was Kim Iseong's great-grandson and authored works such as 'Dongguk Munheonrok.' Oksan Seowon is divided into three zones. The central zone has the shrine, inner gate, and lecture hall (Oksanjeongsa) in a row; east of the lecture hall is the caretaker's quarters. Southwest of the lecture hall is a spirit hall and three-gate for Inil-jeong. The shrine was rebuilt in 1956 with Kim Namsik at center and Kim Iseong and Kim Seongeun on either side. The lecture hall Oksanjeongsa was rebuilt in King Jeongjo's 10th year (1786) and restored in 1987.
