About this place

A seowon is a private educational institution of Joseon established to hold memorial rites for eminent Confucian scholars and to educate local residents. Baeksan Seowon has been maintained since its founding during the Japanese colonial period in 1928, enshrining the tablets of Joseon official Cheongok Yun Chan, Gubong Yun Yeolim, Jukgye Baek Seonnam, Jukaum Yun Jaseon, and Damjae Yun Jamin. The shrine Baeksansa is a gabled-roof tile building, three bays wide and three bays deep. The lecture hall where military officers and officials gathered for lectures is five bays wide. The inner and outer three-gates are each three bays wide. According to tradition, the pillars of the shrine were made from timber felled on Baekdusan Mountain and transported by sea. Although the colors have faded considerably, it is a fairly large complex. It is owned and managed by the Papyeong Yun clan Baeksansa clan association.
