Located in Gahoe-dong in Bukchon, Baekinje-gaok is a representative hanok of the Japanese colonial period that preserves the style of modern hanok intact. On a 2,460㎡ lot overlooking all of Bukchon, a dignified men's quarters (sarangchae) stands at the center, with a spacious women's quarters (anchae) and a broad garden, while a small detached annex (byeoldangchae) sits at the highest point. Retaining the beauty of the traditional hanok while embracing modern changes, Baekinje-gaok is introduced—along with the Yun Posun House—as a building representative of Bukchon in terms of both architectural scale and historical value. Built using black pine (黑松) from the Amnok (Yalu) River, first introduced to Seoul at the 1907 Gyeongseong Exposition, Baekinje-gaok has several features that set it apart from typical upper-class houses of its time. Unlike other traditional hanok that separate the sarangchae and anchae into distinct buildings, here the two spaces are connected by a corridor, allowing free movement without going outdoors. The Japanese-style corridor and tatami room, as well as the extensive use of red brick and glass windows, reflect the era in which it was built. In addition, part of the sarangchae was built with two stories, a feature unique to Baekinje-gaok that finds no precedent in traditional Joseon-era hanok.
