About this place

A seowon is a private educational institution of Joseon established to hold memorial rites for eminent Confucian scholars and to educate local residents. Bunyang Seowon, located near the Mupung Tunnel on National Route 30 south of Mupung-myeon, was originally the Dalseong Seo clan's private study hall, Pungseongdang. In 1901 (Gojong 38th year) it was renamed Bunyang Jeongsa, and in 1943 it was relocated to its current site. In 1973 it was renamed Bunyang Seowon. The shrine venerates Seo Seop, a Joseon official who was exiled during the Gyeyujeongnan coup when Suyang Daegun overthrew King Danjong, and Seo Hyojae, a Joseon official who moved into these deep mountains and saved the villagers during the Imjin War. Within the seowon complex are a seowon hall with a hip-and-gable roof (4 bays front, 2 bays side), the shrine Sungmosa with a gabled roof (3 bays front, 2 bays side), the Dalseong Seo clan's memorial hall Chuwongjae (4 bays front, 2 bays side), and three stone monuments.
