About this place

This stone Buddha, carved from two connected stones, stands on the slope of Suamsan Mountain in Yesan-gun. It reaches a height of 5.3 meters and the stone is black mica granite. It leans about 0.2 degrees toward the south but is stable. The head wears a hood-like crown with a wide flat hexagonal hat-shaped stone placed on top. The body has the form of a stone pillar with virtually no volume. The neck, once broken, has been repaired with cement. The left hand hangs down against the body, and the right hand is raised to the chest, holding something like a staff that extends down between the feet. This massive pillar-form style with simplified body expression is similar to the Stone Mireuk Bodhisattva at Gwanchoksa in Nonsan (Treasure) and the Stone Mireuk Bodhisattva at Daejosa in Buyeo (Treasure), which is the unique regional style of Goryeo-period stone Buddhas.
