About this place

Seowon were private educational institutions established by local Confucian scholars in the mid-Joseon period for academic research and the rites of great Confucian scholars. Sadong Seowon is a seowon located in Sasang-ri, Sanseo-myeon, Jangsu-gun. This shrine was founded in 1847 (the 13th year of King Heonjong), demolished in 1868 (the 5th year of King Gojong) by Heungseon Daewongun's nationwide edict to abolish seowon, and then restored in 1957. Initially, the spirit tablets of Kim Jun-son, Kim Gi-son, Kim Il-son, Kim Dae-yu, Kim Chi-sam, and Kim Jeong-taek, forebears of the Gimhae Kim clan who resided in this area, were enshrined here. Upon restoration, Kim Geuk-il was added as a supplementary enshrinement, and at an uncertain later date Kim Jong-jik was also added with Kim Geuk-il as the principal figure. The current Sadong Seowon buildings were rebuilt in 1986 and consist of a three-bay shrine (sawe), a five-bay lecture hall, and inner and outer gates.
