Jungniram Hermitage (Imsil)

This hermitage is located on the slope of Yongryosan Mountain (also called Yongorsan), which can be considered the guardian mountain of Imsil-eup. It was founded as a small thatched hermitage by National Preceptor Jingam of Silla (late 9th century) following the founding of Sinheungsa. Bamboo groves surrounded the hermitage, hence the name Jungniram (Bamboo Grove Hermitage). In 1504, Jieom, the fourth-generation descendant of National Preceptor Bowu of the Goryeo period, rebuilt it, but it was destroyed during the Imjin War. The current hall, Chilseongak, and Sansingak were reconstructed in 1981. Just in front of the hermitage stand three ancient zelkova trees, the largest of which is about 25 meters tall, hinting at the hermitage's long history.
