Jogyeongdan, surrounded by dense pine forest on the Geonji Mountain ridge within Deokjin Citizens' Park, was designated a Jeollabuk-do Monument on June 23, 1973. Yi Han, the 21st-generation ancestor of Joseon's founder King Taejo, was specially ordered to have his tomb area guarded, and subsequent rulers also devoted efforts to its protection. In particular, Emperor Gojong in May 1899 (Gwangmu 3) built an altar here, placed a senior official (dangsan-gwan) on duty, and erected a stele, designating it as the tomb of the progenitor of the Jeonju Yi clan and naming it 'Daehan Jogyeongdan' (Great Han Altar of Founding Celebration). He also held annual memorial rites here. The altar, along with Gyeonggijeon Shrine and Jogyeongmyo, reinforced Jeonju's significance as the ancestral home of the royal Yi clan. According to the Jeonju Yi clan genealogy, Yi Han — a Silla-era official — is listed as the progenitor, with records showing the family lived in Jeonju through the 18th generation (Mokjo, ancestor of Taejo). On the south side of the altar, about 20 m away, a stele erected by Emperor Gojong stands in a stele pavilion.
