Seocheon Hyanggyo is an early Joseon educational institution established by the government for the education and moral instruction of the people of the Seocheon region. The exact date of its establishment is not known, but it is presumed to have been built during the early Joseon period when many hyanggyo were established nationwide. Records of subsequent repairs exist, and it was significantly renovated during the reign of King Gojong (1863-1906). The layout places the Myeongnyundang lecture hall (learning space) at the front and the Daeseongjeon shrine hall (ritual space) at the rear — a typical 'study in front, shrine in back' arrangement. The complex is a representative example of Joseon Confucian educational architecture.
