Nogyeseowon

About this place

Nogyeseowon originates from Nogyesa, a shrine built by the Confucian community of the Punggi area in the late Joseon period to commemorate Jin Jung-gil. Within the precinct of Nogyeseowon remain Sanghyeonsa, the lecture hall, Haengjeong, the ritual-preparation hall, and other buildings. The shrine, Sanghyeonsa, is where the memorial tablets of Jin Jung-gil and Han San-du are enshrined. It is a gable-roofed building measuring 3 bays across the front and 1 bay on the side. The lecture hall, a space for teaching, is a hip-and-gable-roofed building measuring 3 bays across the front and half a bay on the side. The floor plan is of the jungdang-hyeopsil type, with a wooden-floored hall laid in the center and heated ondol rooms on either side. The northern room of the ritual-preparation hall is used at the front as a storeroom and at the back as a toilet. Haengjeong is a pavilion that Jin Jung-gil built after planting a ginkgo tree on the former site of Bonghwangdae. Later, his descendants rebuilt and repaired it, and so it has come down to the present day.
