Seogangsa Shrine in Gimje was built in 1935 to enshrine the portrait of Jang Tae-su (1841–1910), a civil official and patriot of the Korean Empire. Jang passed the civil service examination in 1861 and held various posts before resigning in 1895 when the forced hair-cutting ordinance was issued. He then called himself the 'Hermit of Namgang' and resisted Japanese imperialism.
