Seobinggo-dong Bugundang

Seobinggo-dong Bugundang is a ritual shrine that the residents of this village built during the Joseon period to protect the village and ensure the well-being of its people. Bugundang is a name for such shrines used only in the Gyeonggi region centered on Seoul. This shrine not only shows the architectural style of shrines in the late Joseon period but is also a small tile-roofed building reflecting the village-rite faith of the Seoul area; preserved here are five hanging boards (hyeonpan)—including one hung in 1635 (the 13th year of King Injo of Joseon) when the shrine was repaired—and shaman paintings (musindo). In particular, the musindo are said to depict King Taejo of Joseon and his consort, as well as the Sambul Jeseok, the deities of childbirth, life, and farming, and they serve as the guardian spirits that protect the village.
