Jowangsa Temple is a small temple located behind the Buyeo National Museum. This place is presumed to have been established during the Goryeo period, but nothing specific about its history is known. Jowangsa began to be known to the world during the Japanese colonial period. In 1913, a seated Vairocana Buddha statue - later designated as a Chungnam tangible cultural heritage - was discovered behind the temple, and in 1919 a dharma hall was constructed to enshrine the statue, marking its restoration. Recently, the monks' quarters were built in 1981, the bell pavilion in 1984, and the main hall in 1997. In 1987, a stone pagoda that had been buried was accidentally revealed by heavy rain and restored, designated as a Buyeo county folk heritage. This place offers a fine view of Hwajisan Mountain, the southern Buyeo cityscape, and the distant Baengmagang River, and is well-known for its spring water flowing from between cliffs and rocks.
