It was founded in 1783 (7th year of King Jeongjo) as Doan Seodang in Dogok-ri, Gongseong-myeon, to enshrine the Joseon-era scholars Kim U-tae and Kim Si-tae. It was later relocated to nearby Sanhyeon-ri and renamed Doansa, then was demolished in 1870 (7th year of King Gojong) under the edict ordering the abolition of private academies. It remained unrestored for over a century until, through the efforts of a descendant, Mr. Kim Gyu-ho, a restoration committee was formed in 1999. The following year, in 2000, it was rebuilt with a newly constructed lecture hall and shrine at the foot of Wontongsan Mountain in Pangok-ri, Hwadong-myeon, a clan village of the Cheongdo Kim family. The shrine and lecture hall are arranged in a straight line in the 'shrine on the left, study on the right' layout, and a stele commemorating the academy's reconstruction stands in front of the lecture hall.
