Dodeogam (Chilgok)

Dodeogam is a temple of the Jogye Order located in Gudeok-ri, Dongmyeong-myeon, Chilgok-gun. It is said to have been founded in 435, though no precise records survive. In 968, State Preceptor Hyegeo carried out an extensive renovation and named it Chilseongam. After it was damaged during the Imjin War (Japanese invasions of 1592), the Nahanjeon (Arhat Hall) was built in 1632. Following several further renovations, the great monk Seonui of Monggyedang renamed it Dodeogam in 1854. Within the grounds are the Geungnakjeon (Hall of Paradise), Daeungjeon (Main Hall), Sansingak (Mountain Spirit Shrine), Jonggak (Bell Pavilion), monks' living quarters (Yosachae), and Yeomhwasil, among others. Its cultural properties include the 'Portrait of Great Monk Seonui of Monggyedang at Dodeogam, Chilgok,' designated a Tangible Cultural Property of Gyeongsangbuk-do, and a late-Joseon arhat statue (a sculpture depicting an arhat, a saint who has attained enlightenment and is worthy of receiving people's offerings), both enshrined in the Nahanjeon. The grounds also preserve the 'Eojeongsu' (Royal Well), tied to the anecdote that when King Gwangjong of Goryeo stayed three days at Dodeogam to invite State Preceptor Hyegeo as royal preceptor, the spring water he drank cured all his internal ailments.
