Yecheon Chogan Gonpa Jongdaek & Byeoldang of the Yecheon Gwon Clan

The Yecheon Gwon Clan Chogan Gonpa Jongdaek is the house built by Gwon Osang, the grandfather of Chogan Gwon Munhae (1534-1591), positioned on sloping ground in a southeasterly direction, backed by a lushly wooded low hill. The inner quarter (anchae) is a U-shaped five-by-five-bay building with a hip-and-gabled (팔작) roof on a two-tiered stone foundation, which makes the building appear imposing. On the right front of the anchae is the byeoldang (a detached guest pavilion, designated Treasure No. 457); to the left is the Baekseunggak, where the Daedong Unbu Gunok woodblocks and manuscript (Treasure No. 878), and Gwon Munhae's Chogan Diary (Treasure No. 879) are stored. In front of the byeoldang was a corridor-and-gate building, but it has since been removed. The anchae and the byeoldang are connected to allow free passage between the two spaces. This is a rare example showing the characteristics of early Joseon guest-reception houses and the vestiges of a pavilion-type reception building. The byeoldang stands in the famous geomantic site of Jugnimri Daesumaeul, Yongmun-myeon, Yecheon-gun. It is said to have been built by Gwon Osang, grandfather of the mid-Joseon scholar Chogan Gwon Munhae (1534-1591). It is a raised-platform house (다락집) with high stone foundations of rough stone and railings. It has four bays wide and two deep; the right three bays form a large wooden-floored hall (daecheong) and the left one bay is an ondol room.
