Cheongnyongsa (Blue Dragon Temple) is a branch temple of Jogyesa, the head temple of the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism, located in Sungin-dong, Jongno-gu. It was founded in 922 by royal order of King Taejo Wanggeon in accordance with the final wish of National Preceptor Doseon. The temple was built on a ridge that, according to geomancy (feng shui), corresponds to the outer blue dragon of Hanyang (present-day Seoul), hence the name Cheongnyongsa. It was first rebuilt by Buddhist nun Manseon in 1036, and has since undergone a total of ten reconstructions. The temple was reverted to its old name Cheongnyongsa in 1923, underwent major reconstruction in the 1950s, and was rebuilt again in 1973.
