The Foundation Stones of Sindonae at Gyeryongsan Mountain are cultural properties scattered throughout Sindoan-myeon in Gyeryong, Chungcheongnam-do. Sindoan-myeon is the area that Yi Seong-gye, King Taejo, the founder of the Joseon Dynasty, chose as a candidate site for a new capital. For about a year, many people were mobilized to transport timber, stone, and other materials to build a palace, but the work was halted because Sindoan lay too far to the south of the country, had poor transportation and water supply, and, resembling Gaegyeong of the Goryeo Dynasty in terms of feng shui (pungsu), was deemed unfavorable for the new dynasty. About 115 of the foundation stones that were brought to the palace site to be used as cornerstones remain and have been handed down to this day. They were designated a Tangible Cultural Property of Chungcheongnam-do in 1976 and are preserved as such; at present, some of them lie within a military installation protection zone, making it difficult to view them all.
