About this place

This is a standing stone Buddha (seokbul ipssang) located in the Seongmunan Village of Hakjeong-ri, Samgye-myeon. Estimated to be a Goryeo-period stone Buddha that conveys a weighty rather than refined impression. The stone Buddha was discovered with its lower half buried in the ground in the middle of a field, with the pedestal and halo lying separately. A 2002 excavation survey revealed the stone Buddha's dimensions: height 245 cm, width 98.8 cm, thickness 35.4 cm. From 2003, the stone Buddha was moved to the hall of nearby Seongmunsa Temple for temporary preservation. As residents petitioned from 2014 for the statue to be returned to its original location, a relocation plan was drawn up in 2016, and an excavation survey was carried out in 2017 on land presumed to be the original location. In June 2019, it was relocated and reinstalled at its estimated original location. In 2022, a protective structure was built as part of a provincial cultural heritage repair project.
