This is where General MacArthur inspected the Han River defense line right after North Korea's invasion, before the U.S. decided to enter the war. On June 29, 1950, MacArthur, Commander of U.S. Far East Command, arrived at Suwon airfield and received a briefing on the war. Determined to see the front himself, he moved through Siheung to a hill beside the Oriental Brewery factory (today's Yeongdeungpo Park) facing the Han River front, and observed the situation. One soldier defending the hill there famously said, 'I will hold this position until my commander orders me to withdraw'.
