About this place

Yongan Hyanggyo is a Joseon-era local educational institution in Gyodong-ri, Yongan-myeon, Iksan-si, Jeollabuk-do. Originally established in 1391 in present-day Jungsin-ri, Yongan-myeon, approximately 600 meters from the current location, it was relocated in 1416 (Taejong 16th year) to its current site. Rebuilt in 1592 (Seonjo 25th year), it suffered a fire in 1927 leaving only the Daeseongjeon intact; all other structures were rebuilt in 1961, and the Daeseongjeon was repaired in 1966. As modern society progresses, the Sungkyunkwan and Confucian scholars across the country have promoted the role of hyanggyo institutions, with each county's hyanggyo providing experiential and ethical education for primary, middle, and high school students in the area.
