About this place

The Daewonsa Yonggak Stupa is one of the stupas preserved within the grounds of Daewonsa Temple on the eastern slope of Moaksan Mountain (795 m) in Wanju. A stupa (budo) in Buddhism is a pagoda that enshrines the relics of a monk. Daewonsa has a total of 10 stupas: four in the northeast and six in the valley. The Yonggak Stupa is one of the four located in the northeast, dating from the Goryeo period. It is bell-shaped, made from dressed natural stone, and engraved with cloud, dragon, and lotus motifs. In 1976, it was designated a Tangible Cultural Heritage of Jeollabuk-do (now Jeonbuk Special Self-Governing Province). From where this stupa stands, the valley where Daewonsa sits can be seen below, adding to its scenic atmosphere.
