Daejosa Temple in Buyeo is located on the southern slope of Seonghungsan (260.1 m) in the southern part of Buyeo-gun. Like the nearby Garimseong Fortress, it was built in the early 6th century and boasts a history of nearly 1,500 years. Its high stone walls give it an appearance resembling a mountain fortress. According to legend, an old monk was meditating under a rock here when a great bird landed on the rock; when he woke from his sleep, the rock had transformed into a Mireuk (Maitreya) Bodhisattva statue, hence the name Daejosa (Great Bird Temple). The stone Mireuk Bodhisattva standing statue (about 10 m tall), designated as a Treasure, is one of the great Goryeo-period stone Mireuk Bodhisattvas and is considered a twin work to the Stone Mireuk Bodhisattva at Gwanchoksa in Nonsan.
