About this place

Confucian schools (hyanggyo) were state-run local educational institutions of the Goryeo and Joseon periods, established to honor great Confucian scholars and educate the local populace. During the Joseon dynasty they received land and servants from the government, but their educational function was abolished with the Gabo Reform of 1894. Deoksan Confucian School in Deoksan-myeon, Yesan-gun is said to have been founded during the reign of King Injo, though the exact date is unknown. The Daeseongjeong main shrine hall was repaired in the 8th year of King Sukjong's reign and again in 1987. The layout follows the 'front study, rear shrine' plan: the Myungnyundang lecture hall stands at the front and the Daeseongjeong shrine at the rear. A statue of Confucius stands in the flat ground before the school, and in summer crape myrtle trees bloom red around the buildings.
