About this place

A seowon is a private educational institution established by local Confucian scholars from the mid-Joseon period onward for research and memorial rites honoring eminent Confucian scholars. Dugok Seowon was established in 1634 by consensus of local Confucian scholars to commemorate the loyal service and virtuous conduct of Jeong Mong-ju, Gang Won-gi, and Ham Bu-rim. It served the dual purpose of honoring worthy sages and supporting local education, until it was demolished in 1872 following the Regent Heungseon Daewongun's edict abolishing private academies. In 1901, the local scholars established an altar and began holding ancestral rites, and the academy was finally restored in 1970. The buildings on the grounds include a three-bay shrine, a spirit gate (sinmun), the four-bay Yeongmojae hall, and the Sunguimun gate. The tablets of Jeong Mong-ju and Gang Won-gi are enshrined in the shrine. Yeongmojae functions as a lecture hall and is divided into a central wooden floor and rooms on either side; it is used for various academy events, gatherings of Confucian scholars, and scholarly debates.
