The Malmok Marketplace, located across the road from the Ipyeong-myeon township office in Jeongeup, was the place where several thousand farmers from the Baedeul Plains gathered in 1894 — before marching on Gobu — during the Donghak Peasant Movement. It served as the base where the Jangdu-cheong (camp headquarters) was established and the troops were stationed until the First Baeksan Gathering. Here, there stands a persimmon tree approximately 180 years old. Tradition holds that under this tree, Jeon Bong-jun addressed the gathered farmers and revealed the corrupt governance of County Magistrate Jo Byeong-gap and the exploitation of the peasantry, urging the necessity of a peasant uprising. Local residents still do not pick the persimmons from this tree. (Source: Cultural Heritage Administration)
