About this place

Bangok Seowon is a late Joseon seowon located in Sanjeon Village, Suseok-ri. The Damyang Guk clan families living in this region erected it in February 1871 (the 8th year of King Gojong) to honor the high ideals of loyalty and filial piety of their ancestors, and it was rebuilt in 1995. At the entrance of Bangok Seowon stands a stele commemorating the rebuilding of Bangoksa, and behind it is the Chunghhyo-mun (Gate of Loyalty and Filial Piety), the gate leading into Bangok Seowon. Inside the grounds, in addition to the shrine and lecture hall, there are inner and outer gates and one administrative building (gyojiksa). The shrine of Bangok Seowon is a three-bay-front, two-bay-side saddleback-roof structure, and the lecture hall is a four-bay-front, two-bay-side hip-and-gable roof structure. Currently, the spirit tablets of Guk Ham, Guk Ham, Guk Chim, and Guk Myeong are enshrined, and memorial rites (hyangsa) are performed on the neutral day (jungjeong-il) in the 2nd and 8th lunar months.
